You probably don’t know this friend,
But every time I design the exterior of any modern farmhouse I always follow “The Old Town Principles”:
7 non-negotiable modern farmhouse design rules that have never disappointed me in over 12 years of using them.
Here we go…
Rule #1 - Keep Colors Simple
Stick with a neutral color palette. White is always a good base for a modern farmhouse, and you can add some drama with black or natural wood accents, especially on details like window frames and doors.
Rule #2 - Go Natural
Use materials like wood, stone, and metal. They should have a bit of a rustic vibe but be clean and polished to keep things modern.
Rule #3 - Steep Roofs
Don’t forget about those iconic steep-pitched roofs. They're not just stylish but practical too, helping rain and snow slide right off.
Rule #4 - Big Front Porch
A large, welcoming front porch is a must. It’s the perfect spot for hanging out and adds a warm, inviting touch to the front of your home.
Rule #5 - Board and Batten Siding
This type of siding is a classic farmhouse touch. It adds texture and a vertical emphasis that really draws the eye.
Rule #6 - Rustic Lighting
Opt for lantern-style lighting. It’s a little rustic, a little refined, and perfect for lighting up your porch and pathways.
Rule #7 - Soft Landscaping
Finally, keep your landscaping gentle and natural. Use soft, flowing plants and features like wooden fences or stone paths that complement your home’s style.
Now that you know all of the rules friend,
Let me ask you…
Does your home follow all of them?
Let us know after voting in the poll below!
Till next time,
Your favorite modern farmhouse designer,
