What does ‘modern’ have to do with ‘farmhouse’?

Hey friend,

Isn’t it weird that two opposite words make so much sense together?

“Modern” and “farmhouse”.

They are so different, but when combined like in the living room below we can’t help but say “WOW”:

But what do these words actually refer to?

You hear “modern farmhouse” left and right, but no one actually explains the meaning of each word…

So we thought we’d do that today, starting with the word “modern”:

The “Modern” Half

1. Clean Lines and Simplified Forms

The "modern" in modern farmhouse brings a sense of simplicity and clarity to the traditional farmhouse look.

This is achieved through clean architectural lines, streamlined furniture designs, and a lack of clutter, making spaces feel more open and airy.

2. Neutral Color Palettes with Strategic Contrasts

While farmhouse interiors often feature warm, earthy tones, the modern farmhouse palette tends towards more neutral shades, such as whites, grays, and blacks.

These colors provide a contemporary backdrop that highlights the home's architectural features and allows for strategic pops of color through art and textiles.

3. Natural Light and Open Spaces

Modern design emphasizes open floor plans and abundant natural light, which are incorporated into the farmhouse aesthetic to create bright, welcoming spaces.

Large windows, often in black or dark frames for contrast against the neutral palette, are a hallmark of this style.

And that’s the first half…

The other half? Farmhouse!

Let’s see what that means:

The “Farmhouse” Half

1. Natural Materials

Farmhouse design relies heavily on the use of natural materials to create a cozy, earthy feel.

This includes exposed wood (for beams, flooring, and furniture), stone (for fireplaces and accents), and other organic materials like cotton and wool for textiles.

These materials help to bring the outdoors inside and create a sense of warmth and comfort.

2. Rustic Elements

The farmhouse style is about rustic beauty and embraces imperfections.

Distressed wood, vintage furnishings, and antique pieces with a sense of history are common, adding character and a lived-in feel to the space.

3. Warm and Welcoming Spaces

Farmhouse interiors are designed to be inviting and comfortable, with open kitchens, large family dining areas, and cozy living spaces that encourage gathering and spending time together.

Furniture is often substantial and comfortable, inviting relaxation.

And now you know the dark truth behind the modern farmhouse style!
