Have you ever had to choose between restoring furniture and buying a new one, friend?
Well, it certainly happened to me…
And I don’t know about you, but I always tend to opt for restoring my old furniture.
And not just cause it’s cheaper than remodeling my entire living room every year…
But more because I see it as a way of preserving my memories.
So before you think of giving away your old furniture and head to IKEA, here’s 7 easy steps to restore any piece of furniture.
Step #1 - Assess the Piece
Start by assessing the condition of the furniture. Look for signs of damage like water stains, cracks, and old repairs. This will help you understand the amount of work needed.
Step #2 - Gather Your Tools
This is what you need friend
Sandpaper (various grits)
Wood filler
Paint or stain
Brushes and cloths
Protective gear (gloves, masks)
Step #3 - Cleaning
Clean the piece thoroughly with a mild cleaner or soap and water to remove dirt and grime. Let it dry completely.
Step #4 - Stripping Old Finish
If the piece is painted or varnished, you might need to strip this off. Apply a chemical stripper and use a scraper to gently remove the old finish. Always work in a well-ventilated area.
Step #5 - Sanding
Sand the furniture with medium-grit sandpaper, moving to finer grit to smooth out the surface. This step is crucial for preparing the piece for a new finish.
Step #6 - Repairing Damage
Fill any holes or cracks with wood filler and allow it to dry. Sand down the filler to create a smooth, even surface.
Step #7 - Finishing Touches
Once your final coat is dry, consider adding a sealant like polyurethane to protect the piece from future damage.
And there you have them, 7 easy steps for keeping my memories alive.
It might take a few hours of your time, but it’s totally worth it in my opinion.
