Rustic and charming bench (DIY guidešŸŖµ)

Hey friend,

Weā€™re back with a special DIY guide!

And since summer is just two and a half months away, today weā€™ll show you how you can craft a pliable bench in little to no time!

A beautiful modern farmhouse bench that takes less than an hour to build,

But that gives a rustic and charming look to your house.

Letā€™s start with the materials you need.

Materials Needed

  • (4) 2x4-inch boards, 8 feet long (for the frame and legs)

  • (20-25) 1x3-inch boards, 6 feet long (for the flexible slats)

  • Wood screws, 2 Ā½ inches and 1 Ā¼ inches

  • Wood glue

  • Sandpaper (120 grit and 220 grit)

  • Wood stain or paint (optional)

  • Outdoor sealant suitable for the finish (oil-based for stained projects, polyurethane for painted projects)

  • Tools: saw, drill, screwdriver, tape measure, square, clamps, orbital sander

Instructions

1. Cut the Wood to Size:

  • Legs: Cut four pieces of 2x4 to 18 inches for the legs.

  • Frame Long Sides: Cut two 2x4 boards to 48 inches for the long sides of the frame.

  • Frame Short Sides: Cut four 2x4 boards to 14.5 inches for the short sides of the frame and additional support.

  • Slats: Cut the 1x3 boards to a length that fits the bench's width (approximately 48 inches, adjust based on the frame size).

2. Assemble the Frame:

Using the 2 Ā½ inch screws, attach the long side 2x4s to the legs, creating a rectangle. Ensure it is square.

Then reinforce the frame by screwing the 14.5-inch 2x4 supports between the long sides, spacing them evenly.

3. Attach the Slats:

Start by placing a 1x3 slat at one end of the frame, securing it with 1 Ā¼ inch screws. Do not glue these, as the flexibility comes from the slats being able to move slightly.

Continue attaching the slats across the frame, leaving a small gap (about Ā½ inch) between each slat for flexibility and water drainage. The last slat should align with the end of the frame.

4. Sand and Finish:

Sand the entire bench with 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220 grit for a smooth finish.

Apply your choice of stain or paint. For a modern farmhouse look, white paint or a light wood stain works well. Allow to dry.

Finish with a coat of outdoor sealant to protect the bench from the elements.

5. Final Assembly:

If the bench feels too flexible, you can add more slats or adjust the spacing to increase rigidity. For additional support, consider adding a middle leg.

Customization Options:

  • Cushions: Add outdoor cushions for extra comfort and a pop of color.

  • Armrests: For added comfort, consider adding armrests to the ends of the bench by extending the frame's long sides.

  • Backrest: If desired, you can add a backrest by attaching a frame and slats to the back of the bench.
